About

Films about what justice costs, and who pays for it

Michele Gentile is a filmmaker from the south of Germany who works as director, editor, cinematographer and 3D artist. After his technical college entrance qualification he left for Australia in 2005, worked in coal mining and began studying mining engineering in Brisbane, before mandatory military service brought him back to Germany.

In 2009, deployed as a patrolling soldier in Afghanistan, he made his first documentary in Kabul. A year later he became local co-head of peace project in Palestine, Cinema Jenin, beginning a first feature with Palestinian students — work that stopped after the assassination of his co-producer Juliano Mer-Khamis, and that became The Projectionist.

He co-directed The Court in 2013, shot The Forecaster as cinematographer in 2014, and directed Good Bye Syria and Paddy's Mum for ARD's EinsPlus strand !LEBEN. In parallel he built a career as a TV editor on series including Dr. Klein, SOKO Stuttgart, Großstadtrevier and ZDF's Team Alpin.

In 2016 he founded Little Big Talents GmbH, producing commercials, series titles and 3D animation. Since 2019 he has concentrated on his own films: the short Jamil, awarded the FBW Prädikat “besonders wertvoll”, and his feature debut in development, Witness 26. In 2023 he worked as creative producer, director and editor on a Netflix documentary series, and co-directed War and Justice with Marcus Vetter — premiered at Filmfest München and later awarded the Öngören Prize at the Nuremberg Film Festival.
