Synopsis
The first nation to experience the Millennium Sunrise was Kiribati, a small Micronesian atoll nation in the South Pacific. Once under British rule, it is now a sovereign member of the United Nations — and one of the first places being forced to confront the full weight of climate change.
Millennium Island the film aims to move beyond guilt-driven environmental documentary. Through a personal, self-reflexive approach, it follows the filmmaker’s journey into Kiribati culture and the everyday joy, love and resilience of island communities, using that intimacy to show what is at stake as rising seas threaten the nation’s future.
