Synopsis
In 1962, a year after the Berlin Wall went up, 41 West Berlin students spent four months digging a 135-metre tunnel under the border. Twenty-nine East Germans escaped through it. To finance the dig, the students sold filming rights to the American network NBC — which is why one of the most audacious escapes of the Cold War exists on camera at all.
Marcus Vetter's 95-minute documentary reconstructs the operation from that archive footage and from the diggers themselves. It was made for SWR and broadcast on ARTE and ARD around the 60th anniversary of the Wall.
